The Consortium formed by Acciona Agua, GS Inima, GS E & C and Oman Investment Corporation (OIC) awarded to ECOAGUA the preparation of the bidding project for the desalination plants of Barka 4 and Sohar 3 in Oman.

The project, launched by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), aims to build two desalination plants in Oman, one in Barka, with a production capacity of 281,000 m3/d and another in the industrial area of Sohar, with a production capacity of 250,000 m3/d. Both desalination plants are tendered under the Independent Water Project (IWP) model, so the project award includes the development, design, construction, financing, concession, operation and maintenance of each of the plants, which would be awarded to two different bidders each.

Barka desalination plant also includes the design and construction of the seawater intake works, while the Sohar desalination plant will receive the raw water through an existing seawater intake and brine discharge system that manages another Omani operator, Majis Industrial Services Company, in the industrial port of Sohar.

Despite the tight deadline for the submission of the project and the large amount of documentation required by OPWP, ECOAGUA manages to carry out the works satisfactorily.

Finally Barka is awarded to the consortium consisting of Itochu Corporation, Degremont, International Power and W J Towell and Sohar to the consortium integrated by Valoriza Agua, Oman’s Brunei Investment Company and Sogex Oman.

ECOAGUA continues to rely on the trust of GS Inima after the completion of this project and after having also participated for GS Inima in the preparation of the tender project for the Ras Laffan plant in Qatar, where GS Inima was integrating a consortium with Técnicas Reunidas or in Qurayyat tender project, also in Oman, which ECOAGUA developed in collaboration with Eptisa.
